Wine Way: a Madeira wine tour by car
A winery tour of the island: the old wine lodges of Funchal and Câmara de Lobos, a quinta on the north coast and the vines on their terraces above the sea.

A half day stays in Funchal and Câmara de Lobos. Pickup is included in Funchal, Caniço, Santa Cruz, Machico, Câmara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava.

Where the Wine Way goes
Blandy's Wine Lodge, Funchal. The lodge on Avenida Arriaga in central Funchal, open every day: €17 for 2 wines, €23 for 3, €59 for 5 vintage wines.
Barbeito and Henriques & Henriques, Câmara de Lobos. Barbeito pours 7 wines at 11:30 for €33, or 4 at 15:00 for €18, booked ahead. At Henriques & Henriques, a session of 11 wines is €21.
Quinta do Barbusano, São Vicente. On the north coast, with tastings at 10:00, 11:45, 14:30 and 16:00: 6 wines for €18, or lunch with the tasting for €60.

At a hotel your driver waits at the main entrance, and for a holiday rental in a narrow street we send a map pin the evening before for the nearest point where the car can stop.

The rules for a tasting day
- 18 and over to taste. Children ride along: Portuguese law bans alcohol for anyone under 18. Child seats are free, so tell us each child's age when you book and we fit the right seat.
- No open drinks in the car. Bottles you buy travel sealed in a cool box in the boot.
- Days of the week. Barbeito, Henriques & Henriques and H. M. Borges close at weekends, and Quinta do Barbusano on Mondays, so the route follows the day you choose.
Wine Way questions
What is Madeira wine?
A fortified wine aged warm, in cask, for years, which is why an opened bottle keeps for months. The four classic grapes run from dry Sercial through Verdelho and Bual to sweet Malvasia.
Can we start at Blandy's Wine Lodge?
Yes. It fits at the start or the end of any day, and a half day begins there. Tell us which tasting you'd like and we book it.
Can we see the grape harvest?
In late August and September the grapes are picked and trodden, and Funchal holds its Wine Festival: in 2027 from 22 August to 12 September. The rest of the year the lodges show the casks and the tasting rooms.
Can we add rum or poncha?
Yes. A poncha in Câmara de Lobos fits at the end of the day. For a whole day of either, see the Rum Tour and the Poncha Path.
